Do you know EU toys EN71?

What is EN71?

Children are the most concerned and cherished group in society. The market for toys that are generally loved by children is developing rapidly, and quality problems of toys often cause harm to children. Therefore, countries around the world have increasingly stringent requirements for toys in their own markets. The regulatory standard for toy products in the EU market is EN71, which means that the toy products entering the European market are technically regulated through this standard, thereby reducing or avoiding the harm of toys to children.

What is the test content?

  • EN71-1: Safety of toys – Part 1: Physical and mechanical properties
  • EN71-2: Toy safety – Part 2: Flame retardant properties
  • EN71-3: Safety of toys – Part 3: Migration of specific elements
  • EN71-4: Safety of toys – Part 4: Test apparatus for chemical and related activities
  • EN71-5: Toy Safety – Part 5: Chemical Toys (Except Test Apparatus)
  • EN71-6: Safety of toys – Part 6: Graphical representation of age signs
  • EN71-7: Requirements for finger paints
  • EN71-8: Swinging, sliding and similar toys for indoor and outdoor household entertainment
  • EN71-9: General requirements for organic compounds in toys
  • EN71-10: Sample preparation and extraction of organic compounds
  • EN71-11: Analytical methods for organic compounds

In general, general toys, daily necessities, handicrafts, toy-like products, baby products, etc. need to undergo the first three parts of the test. That is, EN71-1, EN71-2, and EN71-3. Then they can be approved to enter the EU market.

EN71-1 physical and mechanical properties:

This part stipulates the safety technical requirements for the mechanical and physical properties of toys for different age groups from newborn babies to 14-year-old children. It also specifies requirements for packaging, labeling and instructions for use.

It is required that toys must not collapse, be swallowed, have sharp edges, noise, sharp points and other dangers that may harm children’s lives and health during testing.

Specific test items for physical and mechanical properties: sharp point test, sharp edge test, small parts test, pressure test, bending test, impact test, seam tensile test, tensile test, torsion test, noise level, dynamic strength, packaging film thickness test, Projectile toys, hair attachment test, etc.

EN71-2 flame retardant properties:

This section specifies the types of flammable materials that are prohibited in all toys.

It is required that the burning time (s) or burning speed (mm/s) of certain materials must not exceed the limits specified in the standard. Different materials have different requirements.

Products involved:

1)Toys worn on the head: including beards, tentacles, wigs, etc., which are made of hair, plush or materials with similar properties, also include molded and fabric masks and flowing materials attached to hats, masks, etc. .

2) Costumes and toys for children to wear during play: including denim suits and nurse uniforms;

3)Toys for children to enter: including toy tents, puppet theaters, sheds, toy pipes, etc.;

4) Soft-filled toys containing plush or textile fabrics: including animals and dolls.

EN71-3: Migration of certain elements:

This part stipulates the maximum limits for migrating elements (antimony, arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury, tin) in accessible parts or materials of toys (eight heavy metal migration tests).

Accessibility judgment: Use a jointed probe (fake finger) to test. If the probe can touch the part or component, it is considered accessible.

Test principle: Simulates the element content dissolved from toy materials under the condition that the materials continue to be in contact with gastric acid for a period of time after swallowing.
